The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is a student-led and student-run organization that provides professional and social opportunities to all past, present and future James Madison University graduate students. Connecting to the JMU Network
CampusNet is the on-campus student network in residence halls which has high-speed access. Many off-campus apartment complexes provide Ethernet connections to the JMU network. Contact Off Campus Life to find out which apartment complexes provide this service.
Wireless is also available on campus. There are 160 access points in over 65 different locations including the libraries, bookstore, Top Dog Cafe and quad. A Wireless Open House is offered in the fall for students to set up their wireless laptops and ask questions.
Electronic Identification
All JMU students receive an electronic identity (e-ID) free of charge as they enroll at the university. An e-ID is automatically generated from the name submitted on a student’s admissions application. This electronic identity can be used to send and receive electronic mail and for access to a variety of other systems and services.

More than 500 Windows and Macintosh computers are available in student labs throughout campus. The labs offer a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, presentation and statistical software. There are two labs open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. JMU Libraries
Carrier and Rose Libraries, Music Library, Educational Technology and Media Center
At JMU, the libraries are here to support the academic and creative success of all students. We offer comfortable and safe places to learn, explore and collaborate in four locations — Carrier Library, Rose Library, the Music Library and the Educational Technology and Media Center. In the makerspaces in Carrier and Rose, students can tinker, craft and invent with a wide range of technologies including 3-D printers, virtual reality, sewing machines and more. The Libraries’ knowledgeable staff are eager to help students find what they need, whether at a service desk, in an online chat, in a workshop, or by appointment.
Carrier Library is located near the Quad and welcomes about 1 million visitors per year. Carrier offers three floors of study spaces for individuals and groups, JMU Special Collections for rare and valuable items, a makerspace, a café, and lots of charm. It also holds our collections related to the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
The Educational Technology Media Center provides educational technology resources to students in the College of Education and Professional Education Unit, but its library space in Memorial Hall is available for all members of the JMU community to learn, study, and collaborate.
The Music Library primarily serves the School of Music, but its specialized resources are open to everyone.
Rose Library welcomes about half a million visitors per year, providing five floors of beautifully lit spaces for individual and collaborative study, a café, a makerspace, and a 24-hour study area with a secure entrance and a computer lab. The Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) is a central resource for the development and exploration of instructional technologies. CIT staff and student associates are available to serve faculty and staff on a walk-in basis or by scheduling an appointment for focused assistance. CIT staff work with faculty on instructional planning, design of instructional materials, production of instructional materials and coordination of resources for project implementation. In the walk-in production facility, faculty, staff and students can check out digital cameras, master a CD-ROM, scan flat art and 35mm slides, and create color prints, transparencies, digital graphics, publications, classroom presentations and Web pages. In addition, a technology teaching station is available to practice professional and classroom presentations.
The center is also available for JMU students. Students assisting faculty members with the development of materials may use the center during open hours after the requesting faculty member has signed an authorization form. Students working on class projects may use the center during evening hours.
The center offers a variety of faculty development opportunities including hands-on workshops, in-depth technology concentrations, informal discussions and scheduled project support sessions. The center’s instructional technology grants program, mGrants, encourages faculty to develop and implement creative methods of instruction. These grants provide faculty with consulting services, support services and funding to design and develop course materials, experiment with new teaching models and promote active learning.

Police XE "Police"
The university police are commissioned officers with comprehensive law enforcement powers. University police continually patrol JMU’s campus and facilities, providing full-service protection to the JMU campus community.
The Campus Police Cadet Program carefully screens and trains students to aid the university police. Cadets are on duty from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. each weeknight and until 3 a.m. on weekends. Cadets are responsible for patrolling the campus and securing academic and administrative buildings each evening. In addition, they provide escort services to students walking across campus. When cadets are off duty, university police officers escort students as needed.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs and activities receiving federal funding. Title IX states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” Sexual Misconduct, including Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment, are all forms of sex-based discrimination prohibited by Title IX. JMU Policy 1340 in conjunction with Policy 1324 and Policy 1302 set out the university’s commitment to providing a learning environment and workplace free from all forms of illegal sex discrimination and provides procedures for university students, employees, visitors, and affiliates to file reports and/or formal complaints.

First-Year Academic Advising
Academic advising is vital to student success. First-year advisors assist students in shaping their educational experience to meet specific intellectual, personal, and career goals. Advisors do not decide their students’ goals or educational program but instead help them learn how to develop appropriate goals, make good choices that enhance learning and personal growth, and succeed in and out of the classroom.
During summer orientation, all new students are assigned to first-year advisors who discuss with them our programs of study, academic policies and procedures, incoming credit, and class enrollment procedures. These advisors continue to work with first-year students until midway through the spring semester, at which time those students with a declared major are assigned to advisors within their academic unit. Students who are still exploring majors are assigned to a professional academic advisor in University Advising. Students must declare their major by the beginning of their sophomore year. Please refer to Academic Policies and Procedures for information on declaring a major.
JMU students are responsible for the educational choices they make; however, they make these choices in a supportive environment. Effective academic advising is a relationship between the student and their advisor. Students must be aware of their own interests, values, and goals; knowledgeable about relevant policies and requirements; and willing to take initiative in seeking assistance when needed. Our academic advisors respond to their students as individuals, are aware of their progress, and help them make connections between academic choices and career possibilities.
Major Academic Advising
University Advising provides full-time academic advising support for major exploration and in select academic programs with large student enrollments to help students make progress in major requirements. Full-time academic advisors are joint appointments between the academic unit and University Advising.
International Study Center Students
The international advising coordinator helps international students make progress from the International Study Center to JMU by assisting them with General Education requirements, selection of a major, graduation requirements, and course registration.
Prospective Transfer Students
Prospective transfer students should choose courses carefully at their current college or university, completing General Education and major coursework that prepares them to make timely progress in their major after transferring to JMU. University Advising maintains online resources to help prospective students understand transfer equivalencies in each major and administers a co-advising program to provide assistance with academic planning to current community college students. JMU’s two Transfer Advising Coordinators hold regular office hours on the campuses of Blue Ridge, Lord Fairfax, Northern Virginia, and Piedmont Community Colleges, and are available to students at other community colleges or four-year institutions through virtual advising meetings.
New Transfer Students
University Advising coordinates the advising and class registration process for new transfer students matriculating to JMU in the fall and spring semesters. All new transfer students who have earned at least 30 transfer credits must declare a major upon entering the university and are advised by an academic advisor in their major. Advisors support new transfer students in reviewing transfer credit, enrolling in classes, developing academic goals, exploring career opportunities, connecting to campus resources, and understanding academic policies and procedures.
Madison Advising Peers
Madison Advising Peers (MAPs) are JMU students who care about their fellow students and are committed to helping them achieve their college goals. MAPs work in conjunction with faculty advisors by providing supplemental academic advising information and assisting other JMU undergraduate students who may have general advising questions. New students at JMU are required by state law to submit specific information about immunizations. JMU does NOT require a physical exam, but you must comply with the immunization requirement prior to attending classes. Therefore, it is mandatory that you complete the following steps:
- Print the JMU immunization form (http://www.jmu.edu/healthcenter/Forms/Immunization%20Form) and have it completed and signed by a health care professional. If a different immunization form is used by your health care provider or you have a completed one from another college or university, it will be accepted in lieu of the JMU form.
- Log in to your MyJMUChart account (http://www.jmu.edu/healthcenter/myjmuhealth) to upload a scanned copy of the completed and signed immunization form, as well as a copy of your health insurance card (front and back):
- While in your MyJMUChart account, complete the required TB Assessment (four questions) and the brief Health History (four questions) under the “forms” tab.
These steps only have to be completed once, not every year.

JMU is a very active campus where 92% of students visit UREC at least twice a month and 99% of students indicate that they are satisfied or very satisfied with UREC facilities. UREC is located centrally on campus and JMU’s outdoor recreation facility, University Park, is located adjacent to the JMU Arboretum. Students just need their JACard to enter these facilities as membership is included with student fees. UREC is a vast recreation center with gyms, courts, tracks, aquatic areas and fitness space. The Equipment Center is open for checking out sporting equipment and for locker and towel services. UREC also features specialized areas such as climbing and bouldering walls, a demonstration kitchen, a café, rooms for massage, meditation, personal training, fitness assessment, nutrition counseling, small group training, bike repair and athletic training. University Park, located at 1090 Devon Lane, includes an open event lawn, tennis, sand volleyball and basketball courts, sports turf, pavilion, disc golf course, and TEAM Challenge Course.
By the time JMU students graduate, 95% report having participated in at least one UREC program or service, which range from adventure, aquatics, fitness, group exercise, informal recreation, intramural sports, nutrition, safety, sport clubs, wellness and youth programs. UREC offers a variety of health promotion, prevention, and outreach activities throughout the school year — such as workshops, coaching, trainings, films and other events that teach and empower JMU students to make healthy lifestyle choices.

The Dux Leadership Center

Website: http://www.jmu.edu/duxThe Dux Leadership Center (pronounced “dukes,” which is Latin for “to lead” or “leadership”) helps JMU students become better leaders. The center provides leadership programs like MYMOM, the Strengths Conference based on Gallup’s Clifton Strengths Finder assessment, as well as 1:1 leadership coaching programs and opportunities. Students may check out equipment, books and other resources useful for leadership development, team building and experiential learning leadership activities.
Professional staff in the Dux Leadership Center are certified trainers for the DISC Personality Assessment program and can provide customized workshops to help people learn more about themselves, how to connect with others and how to build teams more effectively. They also serve as leadership consultants, assisting individuals, groups and organizations in the development of their leadership capabilities.

Staff members advise the InterFraternity and Panhellenic Councils, as well as Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA), Greek InterVarsity and Order of Omega Greek Leadership Honor Society. Staff members also work with individual chapters to promote the development of character, leadership, scholarship and service.

The Office of Student Activities, Leadership & Involvement provides a wide range of educational, social and cultural events, as well as support services for all JMU student clubs and organizations. The BeInvolved website offers access to all student organizations on campus. Student Organization Night at the beginning of each semester offers an opportunity for all students to meet members of clubs, learn about organizations and discover how to become involved with them.

Located on the ground floor of Madison Union, this huge space is comprised of a lounge, billiard tables, fooseball, iPads for loan, board games and Auntie Anne’s Pretzel Shop with Carvel ice cream. The TDU lounge area is a popular hangout for all students. There is a computer lab for student use, wireless printing, evening entertainment on the TDU Stage, comfortable seating and an information desk.

Concerts, films, speakers, trips and numerous other activities designed to complement the educational mission of JMU are arranged by the UPB. The board also solicits collaborative programs with other student organizations, university departments and schools. Committees for which students may volunteer include film, special events, center stage, spirit and traditions and spotlight sounds.
